A constantly present element in views of Naples, the San Martino monastery has for centuries been home to monastic life, adapting its walls and decorations to the culture and art of the various periods. After becoming a museum in the 19th century, the Certosa underwent a wide-ranging restoration in the 1990s; the guidelines could be summarised as being the restoration of the spaces and itineraries associated with the Certosa’s religious life, and the coherence between the new museum layout and the character of the site.
